Overview

On January 8, 2024 a project permit was issued to Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to undertake habitat restoration of an old log dump facility located in the northern extent of Indian Arm, British Columbia in federal waters managed by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

The project was approved subject to 35 number permit conditions the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority must meet to ensure the project does not result in significant adverse environmental effects. Please see the Impact Assessment Act Registry for the Notice of Intent and Notice of Decision.

About the project
Habitat restoration of an old log dump facility involves the removal, by a clamshell dredge, of sediment containing anthropogenic materials, such as, logs, cables, rope and wood waste from an area of approximately 4,000 square metres. This is to restore the seabed to a more natural state, to promote an increase in habitat value and biodiversity. Dredged material would be disposed of at an approved disposal at sea site and a suitable upland location.

Habitat restoration works at the log dump facility are proposed to supplement the habitat offsetting plan under PER 20-191 - Sterling Shipyard Remediation and Infill, which is required as part of a Fisheries and Oceans Canada Fisheries Act Authorization.

Note: Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has reviewed this project as well as the Sterling Shipyard Remediation and Infill as a single project. Information about DFO's review is available on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry.
